Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can significantly improve your vision. If you’ve just had surgery – or are preparing for it – you probably want to know what’s safe to do and what you should avoid.
At The Stoneygate Eye Hospital, we’ve helped thousands of patients through their recovery. This guide about the do’s and don’ts following cataract surgery will provide you with clear advice on how to look after your eyes in the days and weeks following your operation.
Do's After Cataract Surgery
Use prescribed eye drops
These drops will help reduce inflammation and prevent infection. Following your operation you will be given instructions by your consultant on how often to use them. Always wash your hands before applying the drops.
Wear a plastic eye shield when sleeping
This is to protect your eye from accidental rubbing or pressure while you sleep. You'll usually need to wear it for the first few nights or as advised by your consultant.
Wear sunglasses when outdoors
Your eye may feel more sensitive to light following surgery. Wearing sunglasses will make you more comfortable and aids the healing process by protecting your eye.
Take it easy - rest for a few days
Your eye will need time to recover. Avoid strenuous activity and give your body a chance to heal. Gentle walks are fine if you feel up for it, but don't push yourself too soon.
Take painkillers if needed
Your procedure is pain-free, but there may be some discomfort afterwards. Take over the counter painkillers like paracetamol will help you feel more comfortable during the healing process.
Keep the area around your eye clean
If you need to clean your face, use cooled, warm water and a cotton pad to gently wipe around your eye. Wipe from the inner corner to the outer, without pressing or rubbing.
Attend all follow-up appointments
Your follow-up visits allow us to check your healing and ensure everything is progressing well. We can also answer any questions or concerns during these appointments.
Don'ts After Cataract Surgery
Try not to rub or press your eyes
Even if your eye feels itchy or watery, avoid touching it. Rubbing can interfere with healing and may increase your risk of infection or complications.
Avoid driving until you meet the legal requirements
You may resume driving only if you meet the legal requirement of being able to read a numberplate from 20 metres away. Please be aware that your current glasses prescription will be inaccurate and could cause visual imbalance. If you are unsure it’s safest to wait until your follow-up appointment or to consult your optician before driving.
Avoid lifting and strenuous activity
Activities like shopping bags, bending down or intense exercise can raise the pressure inside your eye. It's best to avoid these for at least a week to give your eye chance to heal.
Don't wear eye makeup
Small particles from makeup can irritate the eye which increases the chance of infection. Avoid makeup for at least 7 days following your procedure.
Avoid smoky or dusty environments
Stay away from places that may irritate your eye. This includes dusty workspaces or your garden. You should also steer clear of cleaning sprays and chemicals until your eye has healed.
Common questions from patients
What is considered strenuous activity after cataract surgery?
Strenuous activity is anything that puts pressure on your body or raises your heart rate. This can include going to the gym, lifting heavy items, swimming, vacuuming or moving furniture. You should avoid these kinds of activities for at least a week, sometimes longer, depending on your recovery.
Do I need to wear sunglasses after cataract surgery?
Yes, it’s a good idea to wear sunglasses whenever you go outside in the days and weeks following your surgery. Your eye will be more sensitive to light, and UV protection will help shield the healing tissue. Even on cloudy days, a good pair of sunglasses can make a big difference to your comfort.
When can I do housework?
You can do light housework like washing dishes or gentle tidying a few days after surgery. You should avoid demanding tasks like vacuuming, carrying laundry or anything that involves bending down repeatedly. If in doubt – take it slowly and listen to your body.
When can I shower and wash my hair?
You can shower the day following your surgery, but you do need to be careful. Keep your eyes closed and try not to let water run over your face. When washing your hair, tilt your head back to prevent water or shampoo from dripping into your eye.
Can a cataract come back?
